The TCHS has a goal of keeping as many pets with their original owners as possible. A successful transition for the newly re-homed pet is also important. We have a wonderful opportunity to help achieve this through our dog obedience and puppy classes. Our belief is that a trained dog is a happy dog and generally has a very firm place in the family. It makes sense that the more dogs (and people) we are able to train, the more strong the bonds are that develop and quite possibly the less likely those dogs will be considered annoying and relinquished to the shelter.
Currently seven different classes are offered at TCHS:
Puppy Kindergarten: This class is designed to start you and your puppy off right. The class covers everything you need to know about owning a puppy. We teach beginning obedience, geared toward young puppies that includes sit, coming when called, walking on leash and "wait". We also include information on house-training, jumping up, and nipping. The puppies get time to play and interact with one another, and there is time at the end of class for questions.Topics include; manners 101, socialization, housetraining, crating, becoming the leader, and more.
Adult Obedience Level I: This class helps the owner and dog further enhance their relationship. And give you insight on how your dog learns and tips on improving general doggie manners. Loose leash walking, waiting, coming, staying and attention exercises are taught to enable your dog to become a well-mannered part of the family.
Adult Obedience Level II: This class furthers the education of owner and pet. Added work on heeling along with longer attention spans and distance on waits and stays. Fun is added by beginning to teach the dog to jump.
Tricks Class: A wide variety of tricks is taught in this class. Fun and treats are the goal. Play dead, roll over, high five, spin (dance), jumping, limp and crawl are just some of the tricks taught.
Reactive Dog Class: This class is for dogs that have a high anxiety when meeting new dogs, animals or people. Techniques on how to calm and refocus your pet are taught to help better manage them in public.
Harness Work / Carting Class: A class that is fun and functional. Learn how to correctly harness train your dog to pull sleds and carts. Not only does this give you another opportunity to work with your pet, but it gives the dog another outlet to use up energy and be mentally stimulated.
Street Smarts Class: Many dogs are well-behaved at home, but as soon as they come in contact with cars, bikes, skateboards and other animals they lose control. This class will help desensitize your pet and bring focus back to you.
Classes are given Monday through Thursday and some Saturdays. Call the shelter to find out when the next class is available.
Classes are open to everyone, regardless where you got your dog/puppy.
We use reward based training - buckle collar or gentle leader collars only. All proceeds benefit the animals at the shelter.
